The Town is seeking community minded individuals to serve on various Boards, Committees, and Commissions. If you are able to share your skills and experience please submit your name to the Town Office at 403-545-2522 or dave@bowisland.com before October 24th.
Municipal Planning Commission: The MPC is the Development Authority for the Town and administers the Land Use Bylaw. The MPC meets monthly or as needed to consider applications for development. Generally these applications are for discretionary uses and issuing variances to ensure development occurs in an orderly manner.
Municipal Library Board: The Susan Andersen Library operates independently of the Town. However the Libraries Act requires that Board members be appointed by Town Council. The Board meets monthly to oversee budgets and operations of the library.
Recreation Advisory Board: The Rec Board acts in an advisory capacity to the Town regarding recreation and culture. The board meets monthly to provide feedback and advice from the community on our needs for recreation facilities and activities.
Tourism Action Committee: The Tourism Committee meets monthly but is also very involved in activities in our community. The Tourism Committee has been taking the lead on decorating the Town, promoting businesses, the Harvest Festival, and so much more!
Safe Streets and Community Protection Committee: This is a new initiative of the Town. The purpose of the committee is to collaboratively address crime prevention and enhance safety measures within our community, ensuring the well-being and security of all residents. Being a new committee this is your opportunity to help identify safety concerns, and develop strategies and initiatives to facilitate collaboration among community members, businesses, and law enforcement. Access to the Landfill site can become extremely difficult when there has been a significant rainfall resulting in the site being closed. Similarly, when there are very high winds, loose garbage cannot be accepted. If you are uncertain about conditions at the Landfill when you want to haul, call ahead to 403-545-2618.
The alteration in the intake of our water source has resulted in water discoloration. Progress is evident at the Water Plant, and the issue is expected to resolve within the next one to two days. Rest assured, the water remains safe for consumption and daily use.
Residents can now apply to have up to 4 hens at their residence for personal use. The new Urban Hen Bylaw will allow up to 5 licensed residences in Town. If more then 5 applications are received Town staff will perform a draw. Deadline to apply is 4:00
Congratulations to Bill Ressler on his recent acclamation as Town Councillor! Councillor Ressler will take the Oath of Office at the May 13 regular Council meeting. Councillor Ressler is a retired school teacher/ administrator at Senator Gershaw School
At the regular Council meeting on Monday April 8 the 2024 Tax Rate Bylaw received 1st and 2nd readings. 3rd Reading is scheduled for April 22. The municipal tax rates have decreased from 2023 with Residential decreasing from 10.0717 to 9.6040.

At the April 24 Regular Council meeting there was first reading for Bylaw 2023:06 which is an update to the Unsightly Premises Bylaw. It will be renamed the Community Standards Bylaw and has a number of minor changes.
At the April 11 Regular Council meeting the first reading for Bylaw 2023:04 Tax Rate Bylaw was passed. Second and Final readings are scheduled to occur on April 24.
